Say goodbye to worrying about clinic staffing shortages

Since the COVID-19 virus hit the United States, the healthcare system has been depleted of many resources, including healthcare workers. Most clinics are facing extreme staffing shortages.

The World Health Organization (WHO) expects there will be a deficit of 10 million healthcare workers by 2030 around the world, which will mainly impact low and middle-income countries. However, the United States is not immune to this shortfall.

There are many factors that contribute to the shortage of healthcare workers in the United States. Primarily, the issues are an aging population, burnout among healthcare workers, and a lack of nursing facilities.

While these issues are affecting clinics throughout the country, companies like Vasolabs are combating the issue by providing high-quality testing and services through third-party providers.

Why there are clinic staffing shortages

We already mentioned why the United States is experiencing clinic staffing shortages, but let’s take a deeper look at some of the reasons why there are fewer healthcare workers than our healthcare system requires.

We have an aging population and an increased need for healthcare services

The apparent cause of the increased need for healthcare services in our country (and around the world) is due to the COVID-19 virus which resulted in more patients needing to be treated. Healthcare systems around the world were not prepared to treat the number of patients that needed care, and in some seasons we still see how clinical staffing shortages are a public health issue.

Shortages result in patients getting less than acceptable care or having to turn away patients that are not suffering life-threatening symptoms. None of these issues are the fault of healthcare workers, but the unfortunate reality of our healthcare system as it deals with the aftermath of the pandemic.

Healthcare workers are burning out

Burnout is a popular word in the last few years, especially for healthcare workers who have been forced to shoulder so much of the burden as our country faced a worldwide pandemic.  Burnout isn’t a medical condition, but the APA Dictionary of Psychology defines burnout as “physical, emotional or mental exhaustion, accompanied by decreased motivation, lowered performance and negative attitudes towards oneself and others.” Due to the shortage of healthcare workers, the healthcare workers that are still working are facing longer hours and more patients to care for, which can easily cause burnout.

We have a lack of nursing faculty

It’s impossible to train new nurses to enter the field if we don’t have enough facilities or professors. It was reported that nursing colleges turned away 80,407 applicants in 2019-2020 because they didn’t have the capacity to accept the students.

The lack of space is due to faculty pay being lower than desirable. Current nurses are not incentivized to enter academia and raise up the new generation of nurses. Without addressing this issue, we will continue to see a shortage of nurses in clinics among other healthcare workers.
