Local Doctor Helps Community Prevent Heart Attacks and Strokes
With Advanced Cardiovascular Disease Screening Test

Charles Whitney, MD of Revolutionary Health Services Sets Aside Tuesday March 19th
to Screen Local Residents with Carotid Intima-Media Thickness Ultrasound

Washington Crossing, PA – March XX, 2013 – Charles (Chip) Whitney, MD owner of Revolutionary Health Services on 1211 General Washington Memorial Boulevard in Washington Crossing, will be introducing the community to a state-of-the-art screening test for cardiovascular disease in his office on Tuesday March 19th from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

The advanced screening test called the Carotid Intima-Media Thickness (CIMT) Ultrasound is able to detect vascular disease at an earlier stage than any other test available. It is also the first non-invasive test that can see the formation of soft-plaque on arterial walls. Soft plaque is more difficult to detect than hard (calcified) plaque, and actually poses greater health risk as it is more vulnerable to rupture, causing a heart attack or stroke.

Specifically, the CIMT Ultrasound utilizes a high resolution, directional wand to scan the carotid artery and very sophisticated software to render and interpret the images. It actually measures the thickness of the artery wall and any existing plaque. It can also determine if the plaque is soft or hard. The test only takes a few minutes and the patient does not need to disrobe.

The technology is supported by the American Heart Association (AHA), but the AHA comments that quality control is critical. Therefore, Dr. Whitney hires Vasolabs, a company that specializes in CIMT to travel from Texas three to four times a year to perform the tests in his Bucks County office.

The screenings are conducted by a certified VasoLabs ultrasonographer and images are sent to their central office for interpretation by 3 independent specialists to ensure quality control. “I simply can’t wait until national quality control standards allow this life-saving technology to be more readily available locally”, explains Dr. Whitney. “That’s why this is the third year I’m bringing in the VasoLabs CIMT team to perform these advanced screenings.”

Dr. Whitney points out that he’s found soft plaque in many patients with minimal traditional cardiovascular risk factors. Underlying causes in these patients are often conditions such as pre-diabetes and gum inflammation associated with some forms of oral bacteria. He has been a long time believer that patients are optimally served by having their physician and dentist work together to empower patients to create overall health.

According to Dr. Whitney, “Periodontists, dentists and hygienists who are currently treating patients for periodontal disease should tell those patients about the CIMT screening that I’ll be conducting on March 19th. In my opinion, anyone who has oral disease needs vascular screening and anyone who has vascular disease needs oral screening.” Interested dental professionals should contact Dr. Whitney’s office at 215-321-1371 for additional information.

The CIMT Ultrasound test will be conducted On Tuesday, March 19th from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM at Revolutionary Health Services, located at 1121 General Washington Memorial Boulevard, Washington Crossing. The test costs $190.00 and may be reimbursed as an out-of-network expense under some insurance plans. Please check with your insurance provider. If you are not a patient of Dr. Whitney, results will be sent to your primary care physician. Appointments must be scheduled in advance by calling 215-321-1371.
